Do I Belong To Any Community of Practice in the HCM Group of Companies

Friday : 18 June 2010, the Community of Recycling Technology (CORT) Community of Practice had a K Chat Session on KM Operational Model by its KM Facilitator.  This K Chat Session is part of the next action plan that was determined following the KM Operational Model training by Jannezen Consulting in May 2010 at De Palma Hotel that was attended by both the COP KM Advisor and Leader. This session was held with the objective of creating a strong awareness and obtaining buy in on the conceptual aspects and the working applicability of a typical Community of Practice.

Among the main take away points are :

  • Overall Operations-Focused Knowledge Management model
  • The three K Constructs – Knowledge Needs, Knowledge Solutions and Best In Class
  • The Components of K Solutions ; 1.K-Import 2.K-Support and 3. K-Export
  • The construction of a Knowledge Gap Analysis Table and how it strongly correlates with Job Competencies of Staff Development via the Competencies identified earlier in the year
  • The creation on CORT COP Knowledge Map which consists of Knowledge Bases in the K-Portal
  • The important aspects of Knowledge Professional Profile in the K-Portal

We hope that this K Chat would increase the comprehension of its COP members with the various aspects of Knowledge Management and that knowledge is indeed such an important element of our daily working lives.

Should any other COP members from the HCM Group of Companies network wish to access any of the CORT COP knowledge base, please proceed to K Portal under the download section. It is embedded in to Communities of Practice sub folder with the listing of Operations. If you need further in depth access to knowledge, please contact KM Advisor En. Pauziah Abu Kasim, HCME QA Manager was gracious enough to spend time with us in sharing her tremendous amount of knowledge on ISO and its applicability in the CORT context.

The outline of the day was geared towards these key areas of importance :

•    To understand Quality Management & ISO 9001 : 2008 Concepts
•    To brief on ISO 9001 : 2008 requirements
•    To discuss on documentation requirements
•    To outline the certification process
•    To outline benefits of an effective QMS

ISO Compliance – QMS is a competency within the Knowledge Gap Analysis (KGA) Table amongst the CORT COP members; hence, this K Chat Session strives to address that competency accordingly. K Chat on Business Process (Claims and Payment)

On 13 May 2010, HCME Head Office Conference Room,  the Community of Recycling Technology (CORT) COP organized a K Chat Session on Business Process for Claims and Payment in the context of MARECO. This program was led by both En. Qamarul Makhtar and En. Hisham Abd Hamid.

The main key points that was conveyed from this K Chat is as follows :

•    Overall process flow of Business Process in MARECO runs from negotiated tender, preparing budget, ordering, work in progress and to completion of project
•    Areas such as Machinery, Rental and Services during Ordering and Purchasing uses specific forms abbreviated as SWO (Site Work Oder), PO (Purchase Order), and SCO (Sub Contractor Order) which have detailed breakdown of related activities that will alert Business Process users of any anomalies which will affect the financial conditions of a specific project that had been forecasted earlier.
•    The main objective of Business Process is for both monitoring and controlling purposes in which detailed explanation is expected in the REMARKS column of relevant documentation if there is any variance(s) from budgeted amount in comparison to actual usage.
•    Issues such as market rate fluctuations and weather conditions during the life cycle of a project may cause substantial financial difficulty to any project(s) if not arrested early.
•    The are stark differences between users’ perspectives and the interpretation of Business Process of local projects as opposed to overseas projects (i.e Libya).
•    Daily Work Progress are religiously followed and monitored from both project site and Head Office.
•    Concept of Joint-Measurement where theory and practicality comes into play.
•    Concept of Nett Profit and Margin that is derived from deciphering figures from the Income and Expenditure side of Business Process.

At the end of the day, everyone plays a role as we strive towards completion of project on time and within the specified budget, bearing in mind that project profitability is the name of the game. This K Chat Session was attended predominantly by the CORT COP members, and complemented by representatives from the Overseas COP and MIS COP.

K Sharing : CIPR on 31 March 2010

CORT KM Advisor

CORT KM Advisor

Learning from a Subject Matter Expert on Cold In Place Recycling

Conference Room, HCM HQ.  On Wednesday: March 31, 2010, En. Mohamed Napi Yunus conducted a K Sharing Session on CIPR.  By way of introduction, En. Napi works for Malaysian Recycling Company abbreviated as MARECO within the HCM Group of Companies.  He has tremendous amount of experience in Road Design, Engineering and Construction, as such CIPR is very much his area of expertise.  He is also the Knowledge Advsior for the Community of Recycling Technology (CORT) Community of Practice (COP) who was gracious enough the spend time with us to impart knowledge.

CIPR is one of the many solutions which our company employs in road repair works. It is an environmentally friendly and cost effective alternative to partial or total reconstruction of cracked pavements.  Historically, the first CIPR job that was undertaken in our country was a road length of 8km between Temerloh and Mentakab, Pahang of which it was a joint venture effort between both University Malaya and Jabatan Kerja Raya.

CIPR is a good solution in treating major distress roads such as severe crocodile cracks, rutting or deformation, and pumping. The advantages to CIPR are the following :

  • Faster and more efficient as minimal excavation and dump trucks required
  • Reuse of existing materials, and reduces new construction materials and transport cost
  • The technique can give equivalent pavement structure condition and cost saving compared to conventional method
  • Increases the shear strength and reduces the moisture susceptibility of granular materials
  • Flexible and fatigue resistant (Foamed Bitumen and Emulsion)
  • Cost Savings with approximately 10% – 30 %

Some of the ingredients which makes up a typical CIPR solution would require Premix, Foam, Cement, and Crusher Run Furthermore a typical costing of any CIPR project works in the areas of Machinery, Manpower, and Material would entail the following :

Machinery :

Recycling Machine, Water Tanker, Vib Roller, 3 Tonne Lorry, Van / 1 Tonne Lorry, Back Hoe, Back Pusher/Power Broom, Paver Seat, T.Coat and P.Coat Spray, and Motorgrader.

Manpower :

Project Manager, Site Engineer, Site Supervisor, Scissorman, General Workers (Premix), General Worker (Cement) and Accommodation (Traffic)

Material/Other Cost :

Cement, Premix ACBC, ACWC, Diesel, Prim Coat, Tack Coat and Tools

This K Sharing Session was attended by HCME, Roadcare, and KPS HCM business units which cuts across departments such as MARECO, QA Contracts, MIS, SFU, and Engineering.  It was indeed a remarkable session in which knowledge transfer was accelerated between several business units in a single room, in a mater of 2 hours.

We hope that this type of K Sharing Session amongst the many K Solutions which the other 17 Community of Practice (COP) have committed in their 2010 Calendar Plan will enable HCM Group of Companies to reach the Knowledge Based Organisation in 2011 (KBO 2011) target as envisaged by our MD/CKO, YBhg Dato’ Ir Hasnur Rabian Ismail.

The First Blog Entry

This will be the first entry in the CORT COP Blog as such some form of introduction would be appropriate.   A KM training session was held sometime in October 2009, by Donovon Yeoh, a trainer that hails from Agilent Technologies, a spin off from Hewlett Packard. Donovon Yeoh, is the Global Knowledge Manager from in his company that is based in Penang.

Consequent to this training session, it was agreed by YBhg’ Dato Hasnur Rabian Ismail, our Chief Knowledge Officer, that a new KM model would be adopted towards the full implementation of Knowledge Management at HCM Group of Companies. This new KM Model would revolve around the concept of Community of Practices (COPs) that would group together like minded practitioners in the respective departments.  Hence the fruition of the CORT COP came into being. practices.

At present, the CORT COP consists of 10 members :

Mohd Napi Yunus

Hisham Abdul Hamid

Wan Radhiah Wan Hanafi

Qamarul Hazimin Makhtar

Hasniza Hirman

NurSyafiq Wazan Mohd Noor

Mohd Aizuddin Mohd Azman

Faisal Kamaruddin

Abd Syukor B. Khosim

Amir Syafarudeen

As we embark on a new journey towards the attainment of being a Knowledge Based Organisation by 2011, we hope that this Community of Practice approach will enable us to share our thoughts, ideas, and aspirations better towards increasing the knowledge and productive nature of our daily work.
